Hi there!

Is there any extension or some other way to show "news" in my main page? Something like google sites have: the newest articles in some category (or its titles) are shown in a fixed area?

I use an extension to show RSS feeds.   If you want something else, perhaps http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:News might be what you want...

hmmm... I was really thinking about something to show inner news, but that extension can work too.

But probably I didn't explain myself... My fault.  I had a farmed wiki, so I can't install new extensions.

My question was, really, if we have any installed extension that we can use for that, or if the admins will be going to add one soon.

I was hoping for this myself. While I got word that something would be set up for me, it's been... about 26 days since I've heard from anybody about it. In the meantime I tried to make do with putting in a Rss feed, but nope, my basic peon farmer wiki doesn't take to any of the methods I've found so far. I've been looking for a way to slip it in with common.js, but I haven't really found anything there, either.

Hmm, looking at the code it looks like they just... manually put it in themselves, instead of using the Rss feed that Wikis spit out, or anything else. That works if you want small updates to the front page, but effectively useless if you want a system with little overhead and uses the information already produced by the wiki in question.

Or I could be missing something here, there's no development notes in the code, so it looks all manual.

Sorry That was for news that a user has added. You can try using
Quote
{{Special:Newpages/limit=10,namespace=Template}}

This will return the latest 10 new pages, in the namespace template, I think there's a page on mediawiki which has all parameters you can add.

EDIT::
