Hi,
I've been trying to find a way to change the user permissions in order to avoid anonymous people to register in my wiki or at least have the wiki ask the administrator for registration approval but I've been unable to find a way to do it without modifying LocalSettings.php.
Could you tell me how can it be done?
Thanks a lot.

Localsettings.php must be modified to do that. There is no other way.

Could somebody from the admins do this for me then? Or maybe give me ftp access for one day?

Wikkii does not provide FTP-accounts.
It is possible to make the registration thing so that only specific usergroup can make them (like admins or bureaucrats or even a completely new usergroup for that eg. Account creator).

We are using the Farmer extension to manage the wiki farm, and I don't think it supports what you are looking for.
However you should be able to restrict anonymous users from editing pages on your wiki on the Special:Farmer/admin page.

How is this possible as I would be interested in applying it to my own wiki?

I believe this statement might be incorrect. There's Special:Block where you can block visitors via IP. If it is possible to add an IP range, block the whole internet after creating the initial admin account. Then disallow anons to register or view pages.

Unfortunately, 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255 is not a valid ip range. The initial assessment is correct, there's no way to do this without access to the local settings OR installation of the ConfirmAccount extension.

However, 0.0.0.0/0 actually would be valid, if the $wgBlockCIDRLimit was set to allow for this. So a small edit of wikii:s farmer settings would make it work. Isn't this an acceptable solution? Default for blocking is "Block anonymous users only", so I don't think there will be many support issues as a consequence. Setting syntax: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgBlockCIDRLimit

Quite possibly. I'll try it out when I use mediawiki again, I've solved the problem with a simple .htaccess password which I hand out to the user groups.

I was referring to non-advanced hosting wikis, that this could be changed globally on all wikii sites.

You could get an advanced wiki, although I strongly recommend adding ConfirmAccount to farmer wikis. It would be especially useful because of all the spammers that there are.

This was the case until November, now you can get an advanced hosting account.

I highly recommend that. You can use the resources at hub.wikkii.com and community.wikkii.net
