Does anyone know where I can find instructions for creating a bot account, or have advice for making one?  Specifically, I want a bot that can add a category to every single page on the wiki (all namespaces) so that it will be easier to export the pages when I eventually move to the advanced hosted wiki, and for periodically backing up the wiki.

You could try the wikipedia page, but it does sound quite complex.

there is a difference between fully automated bots (e.g Pywikipediabot) vs Semi-auto edit bots (http://hub.wikkii.com/wiki/Hub#Edit_Tools)

both gintama.wikkii.com and gintama.wikkii.net have a semi-bot by the name of User:MS-RZ78-GINSAN
