I'm wondering if advanced hosting will likely return, or if it's probably just gone.  I'll still work on support for it on the hub wiki either way, but I would feel more encouraged and it would be more useful if there were new people using it.

Yes I will be bringing back Advanced Hosting in the next couple days, seeing as a few people have been asking for it.

That's good.  It's what I'll be able to provide the most help with.  Hopefully, I'll be able to transform the Hub Wiki into a better version of mediawiki.org, at least for purposes of the average user.  I have found that a lot of stuff is not explained when installing some extensions, and one of my attempts to provide a more clear explanation was deleted.

This would be great.  It also solves your question about protecting the pages.  You will be able to protect any pages you wish if you are running an Advanced Hosting site.
