You may want to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:RefToolbar_2.0#Porting_to_another_wiki

Note: I have not tried it myself, it looks like a good feature to try.

You do need to copy the following files to your wiki:
* MediaWiki:RefToolbarConfig.js
* MediaWiki:RefToolbarMessages-en.js

So, say my wiki domain name is:

noobwiki.wikinet.org/wiki/

... then how would I add these files? ... do I add them as pages, or templates?

Or Do I upload the files?

You edit (or create) pages with the same names on your wiki, and copy/paste the contents.

In other words, on your wiki, go to page MediaWiki:RefToolbarConfig.js
Then click edit (or create if the page doesn't exist), and paste the contents from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:RefToolbarConfig.js .
And so on.

I have created pages:
MediaWiki:RefToolbarConfig.js
MediaWiki:RefToolbarMessages-en.js
MediaWiki:RefToolbarMessages-de.js

I am having trouble with this step:

Quote
Install as a gadget
To install RefToolbar as a gadget;
copy this script to your MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js.
Create a corresponding MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar page,
add the following line to your MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition:
* refToolbar|refToolbar.js

any advice?

created page ...MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js

replaced contents with script as directed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:RefToolbar_2.0/porting

Created page ...MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar

and pasted script from

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition&action=edit

...then added * refToolbar|refToolbar.js to end

Have I done something wrong?

Thanks for your help

Okay, do the same to copy the following pages to your wiki:
MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js)
MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar)

MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition -- create this page, and add "* refToolbar|refToolbar.js" to it

Good luck -- again, I have not tried doing this.  By the way, this would only be visible with advanced edit menu (may need to check in your preferences).

I think so.  Wikipedia has a ton of gadgets, which are probably not needed and/or undefined on your wiki.

Yes, maybe here is the problem

I compared my wiki preferences page with the preferences of my wiki8pedia account, and in the editing tab, there are 2 extra check boxes on wikipedia:

Usability features:

Enable enhanced editing toolbar
Enable dialogs for inserting links, tables and more

I wonder what has gone wrong

Wikipedia is using MediaWiki version 1.20 (sort of beta).
If you are using a farmer wiki, you are on MW 1.16.
The whole advanced edit menu probably needs a late version of MediaWiki.

If you get advanced hosting at Wikkii, you can install up to MW 1.19 (which is the official release).
1.20 requires a newer PHP version than is available on Wikkii, so 1.19 is the best that you can try at this moment.

That's probably at least part of the reason.

Right, ok, and I would have to pay for advanced hosting?

It's free, but you have to apply for it, and get an approval.
Take a look at http://wikkii.net/ .

If you don't get approved, you could try http://sk.wikkii.net Intermediate Hosting, which is where I setup wikis for people who are not approved or who are not advanced enough to use Advanced Hosting.

I just applied for advanced hosting. Would I need to download mediawiki software or anything?

Advanced Hosting requires you to set the whole thing up from scratch. You will need to use FTP to transfer a mediawiki package and any extensions you need. The hub and mediawiki.org will have tutorials on how to set up.

http://hub.wikkii.com/wiki/Rookies%27_Setup_Guide This is the hubs guide.

Thank you. How long does it normally take to receive the decision about whether you have been accepted for advanced hosting? Or do they not inform you if you have been turned down?

Should I go for this option then?
